I thought it would be fun to have a look at some of my favourite sets from 2019. Rather than looking across all the themes and sets I collected I thought I would focus on the Lego Movie 2 sets, since that was such a great theme in 2019.

So let’s start with my honourable mentions and work our way towards my top pick.

Honourable mention:

Banarnar, from the set Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi (set 70824)

One of my favourite Lego builds from the Lego Movie 2 theme was the character of ‘Banarnar’, who was available in the set Introducing Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi. I think that he looks absolutely hilarious. Every time I look at him he just makes me smile and laugh. I love his googly eyes and his skinny little legs. This is a fantastic brick built character!

Honourable mention:

Shimmer & Shine Sparkle Spa (set 70837)

The Shimmer & Shine Sparkle Spa is a gorgeous set, with a lovely colour palette and some great building techniques. I also really like the minidoll glitter vampire that came with this set. This set just missed out on making it in the top five because the finished build wasn’t as exciting or visually appealing as some of the other Lego Movie 2 sets.

Fifth place:

Good Morning Sparkle Babies! (set 70847)

Of course the highlight of this set are the sparkle babies – they are so cute! They have adorable outfits and I love the disco face paint. I also like the bright colours used in the rest of the build, which is particularly reminiscent of the end of the movie. It is also great to get Lucy and Emmet as happy and super happy minifigs. An adorable set that it loads of fun.

Fourth place:

Sweet Mayhem’s Systar Starship! (set 70830)

This build was lots of fun. I enjoyed creating the circular shape of this starship out of mostly square and rectangular plates and bricks. It is always great to learn how to create unusual shapes from Lego parts.

Of course I also like the colour palette of this build. The large white sections make the dark teal and medium azure look crisp and vibrant. Plus, the small highlights of magenta are fantastic, especially the printed piece that is used as the main window.

I also really liked the Sweet Mayhem minidoll, with her white and magenta outfit, glitter wings and holographic hair – she is gorgeous! This is a great set with lots of amazing details.

Third place:

Systar Party Crew (set 70848)

I really loved seeing some of the well known characters develop their disco alter-egos in the movie. So, when the Systar Party Crew set was released I knew I wanted it for my collection. I think Disco Kitty looks fantastic, especially with her large disco boots and sunglasses. I also like the updates that MetalBeard made, with the additional of dark purple and all the musical instruments – he looks amazing! But my favourite is Disco Benny – he looks so wonderful with the sparkles on his top, his love heart eyes and his star shaped glasses! Disco Benny is my favourite minifig from the Lego Movie 2 theme.

Second place:

Queen Watevra’s “So-Not-Evil” Space Palace (set 70838)

I think this is one of the most unique buildings that Lego has created – the shapes the designers were able to create are stunning. It is also so inspiring to see Lego release a build that has so many organic and curved shapes, as well as the movement of the pods around the base – truly unique architecture for a Lego set.

Once again the colour palette is fresh and crisp, with the large white sections offset by transparent blue, gold and small amounts of magenta and purple.

It is also great to have such a variety of characters in this set too – I love sparkle Batman, although it would have been nice to have also gotten a cape. I really like the minidoll glitter vampire too, especially to have next to the sparkly vampire from the Shimmer & Shine Sparkle Spa set.

As soon as I saw this set I feel in love with it – the build was wonderful and interesting. I am still amazed and captivated by the unique architecture of this palace and love the design!

First place:

Pop-Up Party Bus (set 70828)

There is so much to love about this set – the colours, the minidolls, the brick built characters, the new cog pieces and the light-up brick. I really enjoyed this build, especially the details of creating the racing stripes on the side of the bus. I also liked the overall shape and style of this build.

The colours look wonderful with white being the main colour to make the others look crisp and vibrant. I thought the use of two cool colours (dark teal and medium azure) and the two warm colours (magenta and neon coral), which were then off-set by the transparent purple.

It was super exciting to build with the new cog pieces, which also create movement and fun, along with the light brick.

I would also say that Zobo, the brick built zebra character is also one of my favourite brick built characters. Obviously, behind Banarnar though.

I also think this build took me a little by surprise since I hadn’t seen any reviews or speed builds prior to building it myself. That usually makes Lego set more enjoyable for me.

I hope you have enjoyed reading my thoughts on these sets. Let me know in the comments if you agree with my selection and what your top five Lego Movie 2 sets would be.
